A gloved hand removing packed wet leaves and debris from a clogged roof gutter

Clogged Gutters and the Damage You Don't See

June 17, 20263 min read

Gutters are the most ignored system on almost every building, residential or commercial, and it makes a certain sense: they're out of sight, they don't have an on/off switch, and when they fail they usually fail silently. By the time the damage is visible, it's rarely the gutters you're paying to fix. It's everything they were supposed to protect.

## What a Clogged Gutter Actually Costs You

A gutter has exactly one job: move water away from the building. When it's packed with leaves, shingle grit, and seed debris, water doesn't disappear — it finds the next available path. That path is almost always the wrong one.

- Fascia and soffit rot. Water backing up under the roofline soaks the wood your gutters are mounted to. Left alone, that wood softens, the gutters begin to pull away, and you're now replacing structure, not just clearing debris.

- Foundation erosion. Overflowing gutters dump concentrated water at the base of the building. Over time that erodes soil, pools against the foundation, and works its way toward crawlspaces and slab edges. Foundation repair is one of the most expensive line items a property owner will ever face — and it often traces back to a $200 cleaning that didn't happen.

- Pest harbor. Standing water and packed organic debris in a gutter is an ideal nesting environment for mosquitoes, wasps, and rodents looking for a way into the roofline.

None of these announce themselves early. That's exactly why gutters get deferred until the repair is a major one.

## Why Twice a Year Is the Standard

In the Oklahoma City metro, the two pressure points are spring storm season and fall leaf drop. Spring brings heavy, fast rain that overwhelms any gutter already partially blocked, and our storm season doesn't wait politely for you to get to it. Fall fills the channels with debris that will sit all winter if it isn't cleared.

That's why the standard recommendation is twice a year — once before storm season and once after the leaves come down. Properties with heavy tree cover often need more.

## What a Professional Cleaning Includes

Clearing the channel by hand is only part of it. A proper service also flushes the downspouts to confirm water actually moves through the full system, checks that the gutters are still pitched and fastened correctly, and inspects the fascia line for early soft spots. That inspection is often where we catch a small problem while it's still small.

And candidly, this is not a job worth a homeowner or a maintenance staffer taking on from a ladder. Most gutter-related injuries come from falls, and the higher and steeper the roofline, the worse the risk. The cost of professional cleaning is far lower than the cost of either the fall or the foundation repair.

If you can't remember the last time your gutters were cleared, that's usually the sign it's overdue. Contact us for an assessment — we'll clear the system, flush the downspouts, and flag any early fascia or foundation concerns before storm season tests them for you.
