Oklahoma home with overflowing gutters during a heavy storm — the kind of damage a pre-storm inspection prevents.

Why OKC Homeowners Should Inspect Gutters Before June Storm Season

Oklahoma's severe-weather window does not arrive gently. From late May into June, the metro sees its highest concentration of supercell storms, hail, and straight-line wind events of the year. The roof that survived March and April is about to face a different kind of test.

The single most overlooked piece of storm-prep on a residential property is the gutter system. It is also the cheapest fix and the most expensive thing to ignore.

Oklahoma's Storm Pattern (and Why May Matters)

The National Weather Service Norman office tracks the metro's severe-weather climatology every year. The pattern holds: late May through mid-June is statistically the most active stretch for tornadic and hail-producing storms across central Oklahoma. Heavy rainfall events frequently dump 2 to 4 inches in a single hour during this window.

A clean, properly pitched gutter system can move that volume away from your foundation. A clogged or damaged system cannot. The water has to go somewhere — and that somewhere is almost always the part of your house you do not want it.

What a Clogged Gutter Actually Costs You

The gutter is not the asset. The gutter is the protection for the assets behind it. When it fails, the cost stack looks like this:

  • Foundation damage.Water pooling against the slab leads to hairline cracks, hydrostatic pressure, and eventually structural movement. Foundation repair in the OKC metro typically runs $4,000 to $15,000 and up.

  • Roof rot and fascia damage.Water backing up under shingles rots the decking and the fascia board behind the gutter. Replacement runs $800 to $3,000 per section.

  • Basement and crawlspace water intrusion.Standing water turns into mold within 48 hours. Remediation runs $2,000 to $7,500.

  • Landscape erosion.Mulch beds and grass get scoured out along the drip line, taking topsoil and plantings with them.

A professional gutter cleaning and inspection on the same property costs a fraction of any single one of those line items.

The Six-Point Pre-Storm Gutter Check

If you are walking your own property this week, this is the list to run:

  1. Debris load.Visible leaves, twigs, shingle grit, or standing water sitting in the gutter trough. Anything in there is reducing capacity.

  2. Downspout flow.Run a hose into the top of the gutter and confirm water exits the bottom of the downspout at full volume. Slow flow means partial clog. No flow means full clog.

  3. Pitch and sag.A gutter that sags away from the downspout traps standing water. Visible bowing or pooling after rain confirms it.

  4. Seam separation.Look at every corner and joint for daylight, rust streaks, or visible dripping during rain.

  5. Fascia and soffit condition.Soft, discolored, or peeling wood behind the gutter signals existing water damage. This is a callout for immediate attention.

  6. Discharge distance.Downspouts should discharge at least 4 to 6 feet away from the foundation. Splash blocks, extensions, or buried drain lines all qualify. A downspout that dumps water directly at the slab is a foundation problem waiting to happen.

When DIY Stops Making Sense

Single-story homes with accessible gutters and a stable ladder are realistic DIY territory if you have the time and the safety setup. Two-story homes, steep roof pitches, or any property with visible sag, seam failure, or fascia damage are not.

The math is also worth running. A two-hour gutter cleaning that ends in a fall is not a savings. Emergency room visits and missed work weeks cost more than any professional inspection.
